    Hi guys,

    HELP!

I have bought a load of pink pampas grass, didn't research it and now found out it covers a lot of space.

SO - can i grow it all the way along one side of the garden 6ft fence? Will it look stupid? It's a LLLLLLLOOOOOONG garden and i have 4 of these beautiful plants. How should i space them?

OR - should I just keep one and give the others away.

    Descisions, descisions......

One day i will learn but until then i rely on you guy's :D

Personally I'd keep one and give the others away, I don't have one but my neighbor does. It's formed a big round clump so I think they are a good specimen plant ie. to be planted on it's own.

When the flowers are cut it can look a tad untidy.I Don't think it would work along the whole border.

    Just my opinion anyway ;)

    Hiya Stingo,

Having seen what a few people on GC think of the stuff me thinks I may transplant the 1 to the front garden but the others can go live somewhere else :D

Thanks so much for helping me to decide not to make a dreadful mistake.

Ask me about dogs and i know what i'm talking about but with plants - well least said the better, but hey i'm learning, embarrassingly slowly [IMG]

    Cheers again,

If you have a big garden then several in a clump could look right at home. I think Hilliers have it planted like that. I'll take a pic in the next couple of days so you can see. I took mine out because it was (IMO) too large for my garden, it was under a pear tree, and the birds were making a right mess using the plumes for nests!

I haven't seen one against a fence before - I think they're usually in the centre because they are a bit of an exclamation point, and they look good from all angles (so better with grass / path all round it). Can't see anything wrong with putting it against a fence but I'd guess you need the centre to be 3-4' away from the fence. Not knowing your garden, if I assume you currently have a straight edge between border and lawn it may look good if you push out the border around the pampas, it's always nice to have a curve. The Pampas will kill off the grass underneath it anyway, and this way it will look cleaner and be easier to manage.

I agree with Stingo, a line might look a bit odd. However, it depends how brave you are (remembering that they are difficult to remove once established for a few years). I can see a line of them 7-10ft apart with a lawn that curves in an out. The Alliums in Stingo's avatar might go well between them - the leaves are similar, the long stems echo, and a deep purple against the pink might look good.

Probably the sensible option is to keep one and live with it for a year or two and see if you still like it. They're not that expensive if you want to add at a later date.

    Oogieboogie,

Thanks for your input, gonna try one out front and pass others on, back garden has loads of half moon shaped, wood edged beds down both sides but think i should bow to experience.

I wondered why they were only 95p each

p.s. if my jeep breaks down can i borrow the car [IMG] :D
