My personal thought on red sweet peppers is they are only worth while in a greenhouse, on the odd occasion I 've tried them outside the plants have been stunted and only managed one or two small peppers per plant.

Not sure what you mean by "mushy" toms though.:)

The mushy toms are probably because either you're growing the wrong variety (for example, I always find 'Moneymaker' a bit 'mushy' personally), or you're picking them too late, so they are over-ripe.

I can't remember where, but I have seen red peppers grown outdoors in the UK, however it was in one of those old victorian kitchen gardens where a lot of work had been done to creat the right conditions, ie against a south facing wall and growing on a hot bed. So I would stick to growing in a greenhouse.

'Mushy tomatoes'? The only thing that comes to mind is that they are over ripe as andrewh says or blight has struck them. Are the tomatoes or the plants discoloured? The last few summers have been blight hell in a lot of peoples growing areas.

Tomatoes will go soft if you under-water them.

I don't have a greenhouse, but I grow everything in pots on the terrace, and I was successful last year with sweet peppers, AND chillies...had lots of chillies, actually.
With tomatoes....I cultivate them in grow-bags, tried plum tomatoes last year, worked very well!
