I have a very small garden but have just seen a special offer for 3 raspberry canes (Autumn Bliss). The only place I could put them is against a fence, should that be ok or am I wasting my time? Many thanks

I would have thought fence would be OK - a hedge will eat up the goodness, a wall will mean it is dry (which can be overcome by watering of course), but a fence should be OK.

They will prefer to be in Full sun - so North side of the fence won't be much good I'm afraid

Perfect, thanks. It's a south facing fence but still gets some shade so I think they'll have as good a chance there as they're going to get in my titchy garden!

    Hi Helen,

Yep should be fine. You can use the fence to secure the canes and also for something to attach netting to. Blackbirds love rasberries.

One small thing.. Raspberries spread by their roots running riot underground.. Be careful they don't migrate next door as they can become a problem if not checked early Helen.....

When we grew them along one side of the veg bed I put in weed suppressing fabric to a depth of about one foot to eighteen inches and it worked fine. If buried it lasts for donkey's years and is quite a bit cheaper than plastic. I'm still digging up sections of it and it's about ten years since I dug out the raps.
