My mother's orchid (Phalaenopsis) seems to be at death's door - I've bought her a new one but I'm wondering if I can revive the old one. It's in a sorry state - the roots have come loose from the bark, it has no leaves, one of the remaining spikes is black around a break yet there's a long length of green stem above it which looks okay.

I'm guessing that the solution (if any) is to cut off the broken spike, re-pot it (in the same pot), soak it for a while then hope for the best?

Or is it not worth bothering?

It has no leaves - it's toast. Probably been overwatered. Bin it.

There was something on Gardeners World last night about reviving orchids. Might be worth a look if you've not binned it.
