hi, i wonder if any of you experts could help me choose a maple tree? I have very chalky soil i live on the kent downs, i want to plant in to the soil rather than a pot if possible. my garden is south facing and quite sheltered. i am planting the tree to celebrate recentley becoming a pensioner and its not so bad now that i am there. :)

    Hi crocus,

A tree will grow almost anywhere possible - the environment that it is in will determine how well it does. Acer campestre or common field maple will tolerate most soil conditions, inc. chalky. It is also good for a south facing garden as it copes with full sun or partial shade. The tree is classed as small, has cork-like bark and was used as a hedge plant back in the day. Congrats on retiring by the way - I hope you enjoy your time off!!

    All the best,
    Matthew
