    Hello!

I have a gift from the birds, what I think is a Yew tree. Now, I'd quite like this to grow as a tree, but not where it is. Do you think it will move ok (my hand is in the shot for context).

Would it maybe take to a container?

    Actually, it is a Yew?

They are easy to move at that size and pot up if you want, anytime really now onwards before spring.

Absolutely no problem to lift and pot up or plant elsewhere just now.

Just bear in mind that common yews can get very, very big over time, so choose a good site so that you're not having to prune too much.

Cut around the yew tree so as to exceed the root ball. It may have a tap root which needs to be intact, so expect to go down more than 1 spade depth. Try and open the new hole before you lift the tree so that its planted directly without root disturbance. Yew grow in the wild into rock crevices and old tree stumps so its not too 'fragile' . Remember they are toxic to grazing animals so do not plant against boundaries to agricultural land. Some of the oldest trees found in UK are yew, 1000 yrs plus.
          The UK's oldest tree.

Thanks all. Came out well with a long tap root, with a bit of gently work. It's in a pot right now (hope this is ok) is until I can prepare a spot.

Ot, maybe I could grow it ina container for a smaller specimen?

I have one of those, about that size. Luckily, where it self-seeded itself is an OK position for it to stay. They only grow a few cms a yr, so it will take a long while to get too big. I'm sure yours will be fine in a pot for now. :blue thumb:
