    Hey everyone!
So I've now had too much time on my hands and have decided I wanted to grow sugar cane.

Has anyone grown this before? Does it work out in the UK providing you over winter it in a greenhouse?

Struggling to find anywhere that has it in stock now but wondered if you can actually grow it from seed?

I don't think a typical UK summer would be consistently hot enough, sunny enough or wet enough. It's a crop of tropical regions with high heat and lots of both sunshine and rainfall pretty much every day.
Some info here (aimed at commercial growers, but might be of interest) How To Grow Sugar Cane: Planting And Optimum Conditions

Edit: I guess that's why we make our sugar from sugar beet rather than sugar cane. Sugar beet grows in temperate climates.

You'll be lucky, you need daily temperatures of 25-30C.

The rubra type seem to grow ok over here. Struggle to find it though as it's out of season

Google tells me that's a type grown as an ornamental. Still tender and would need overwintering under cover with unless you live somewhere very mild (thinking Scillies or the like).
Google turned up a few sellers in the UK so perhaps contact them and ask when they expect to have it in stock? It could be that they are growing young plants but they aren't ready to sell yet.
Edit: They could probably also give you better advice on the conditions it needs.

How are you going to achieve the required temperature?

I've grown some crazy stuff over the years, mostly experimental, but I must admit growing sugar cane has never been on of them.
      How big is your greenhouse.
