Can you help identify this tree

    hi all im sue and i live in birmingham...have a lovely allotment plot with all sorts of stuf...had this particular tree on there when we took it over and have no idea what it is or whether the fruit like things that grow are even edible
    can anyone help ?:what:

    Welcome to Gardeners Corner Sue,

    Looks like a Medlar:dbgrtmb: You need to wait till the fruit is "bletted" or slightly mushy, after the first frosts, makes a great jelly or jam. Too hard to use before that.

    Good evening Sue and welcome to the site.:dbgrtmb: I agree with Ziggy, it certainly looks like a Medlar to me also.:thumbsup:

    Yep Ziggy and Dai are spot on it is a Medlar (Mespilus germanica) which I am led to believe taste like overripe banana, although as of yet I haven't been near a tree at the right time of year to try:(

    Put mine out the back to let them blet properly, rats had the lot of them, have removed 3 rats today, they won't be having anymore of mine.

    *cringes* I don't mind rats as long as I can see them, I remember I was removing a dead Convolvulus plant from my rockery a couple of years ago and I heard this god awful screeching noise, scared the treetreetreetree out of me:loll:
