A friend In central England has asked me to recommend a shrub that
    -grows to about 2 metres

    -Autumn colour
    -easy to look after.
    -in semi shade

I said he was asking for everything... but see what you think.

The one that springs to mind is Cornus Kousa which has white flowers and colourful foliage, it grows to about 8ft. :gnthb:

Well, there are a few! Have a look here at a Photinia 'red robin'.

There is also a number of Viburnums, have a look here at a Viburnum tinus

What about Choisya, thinking about the sundance variety. Have a look here.

There is pyracantha, cotoneaster, elaeagnus. I'm sure there are more, but there are a few to be going on with to see if one is suitable for your exact needs.

I think the only thing that these suggestions fall down on are the lack of autumn colour, but I have mentioned plants that have berries, or flower in the winter, and the case of the choisya, it will be a bright yellow in the winter.

    Hope this Helps!

there are also some Viburnum that flower white and the leaves turn a nice red in the fall, can also get some that have ornamental berries on it for winter interest. Also the oak leaf hydrangea, nice white cone flower and red big maple leaves in the fall. Both grow to about 8 foot.

    Hi Quercus

I can achieve 4 out of your 5 requirements!

I'd suggest buddleia "White Profusion". I planted one 18 months ago and I'm already having to cut it back to keep it to 2 metres. It's covered in white flowers and it'll grow just about anywhere. Its only deficit is that it doesn't provide autumn colour.

But it has 2 other virtues - 1) it's virtually bomb proof and 2) it's the butterflies' top choice among all the buddleias.
