    Morning All,

Next autumn, I'm altering my back garden to enable an area with 4/6 raised beds for Veggies. In the past, I've seen mentioned (not necessarily on this forum) no-dig methods, square-foot gardening, never-dig-again and other interesting-sounding stuff. I've not grown veggies before (even at MY advanced age!!!) apart from Rocket, so need some excellent books to start reading now.

If you have one or have read a book that you've found worth-it's-weight, please can you advise?

    Many thanks

    Springshere
    xx

May I suggest that you browse through books on veg growing and alllotments first? They often deal with raised beds as a secondary topic too. That way, you'd learn about the veggies themselves first and then with your existing gardening experience, growing them in raised beds would come more naturally.

Thank you Flinty, I'll look for allotment books at the local library. As long as I can read up on the various methods mentioned earlier, that'll be fine.

Seems not many people read up on growing methods on this forum then.... 8-D

    Hi SpringsHere

Well I am also very new to vegetable growing (my first time this year) and part of my inspiration has been through reading Alan Titchmarsh's The Kitchen Gardener. This book I have found very helpful, it covers Raised Beds in the ground rules has a working calendar and a directory for all your vegetables, fruit & herbs. Well worth a look in my opinion.:thumb:

Then of course there's all the help & advise you could ever wish for on here GC. ;)

Many thanks Martin! THIS is the kind of recommendations I need, after all - I could buy a dozen books online only to find none of them really helpful! Yes, I most certainly will have a look for this one. He's also done a book 'Back to Basics' that I think I'll look out for too.

I've been keeping an eye open for suitable books for you and agree that Alan Titchmarsh's
The Kitchen Gardener is a first rate, comprehensive book on veg, pending the finding of a specific book about the technique of raised beds.

    Hi Springshere.

I to am constructing raised beds for veg growing...found this little tip on the web.

It's obviously going to cost a few bob, but I am not able anymore to bend down and do the digging and planting etc.

So for a few years it wont be 'cost effective' but hey, nowt like fresh veg from your own garden is there? You know how it has been fed and raised and the taste is so much better than shop bought.:thumb:

Bye the way, your still a youngster.[IMG]

but you are a smoothy... 8-D. Yeah, I'm looking forward to this raised beds lark. I'm one of those sad s**s that needs to read and read about something before I jump in at it. So at least I ***SEEM*** to be expert even if I'm not...
