I think I have Canker as the bark is splitting from top/bottom about 40% round and getting more severe all the time.. The leaves look healthy but the bark is getting worse.
Should I wait until the tree dies as I believe there is no treatment or will this spread the disease to other healthy trees next to it.
or should I chop it down and burn it now.
Is there really no treatment for canker.

Evening Jean, is the canker on the main stem or the branches? If it`s only on the branches take out the diseased wood by cutting about 2" to 3" into the healthy wood. If, however, it`s on the trunk or main stem then it is terminal and the plant should be removed and burnt. David.

Can you see the evidence of canker?
Or is it just spliting bark and no sign of said canker?
If it is just splitting, it could be a water problem.
If it has had no water for a period of time and then gets lots from heavy rain, the surge of this water intake by the tree can split the bark.
    Just a suggestion.

The tree is not splitting as much as the bark receeding to 2-3 inch and spreading all the way to the top. I dont know whether its canker as Ive never seen it. I looks bad but the leaves etc look healthy . The branches are fine just the main stem. How can I prove its canker? Will it spread?
