Can anyone tell me if these are the seed pods on a Canna  , i have opened one up and its full of tiny white what look like seeds. The ones i have seen in the past were hard shelled black seeds, what do i do with them, leave them on the plant to dry out or what.
    Thanks

They are, Kev. You have to wait till they are black and dried out (could be difficult there), then you will get one, two or three hard black round seeds out of that spikey pod. Not all Cannas seed. What colour do you have ... we could swap.

Hi lol, thanks for reply. The flowers are orange and the leaves are red/brown. Have a look at an earlier post, my canna has flowered in this section for picture. I would be more than happy to send you some seeds (no show from the ones as yet you sent me, but early days). But how do i get them to turn into healthy seeds, you say could be difficult here, i assume i need to leave them on the plant?

Can't help you with "how to" there, Kev, sorry. I've got four now ... bought a beautiful rose-coloured one I hope will seed.

Yes, you need to leave them on the plant ... that is the problem I would think if they don't dry out. We have quite a few Canna folk here (Waco is on hols I think) ... pete, strongy, roders ????

They usually ripen (the seed that is)if left long enough.
The pods get bigger and when ripe the rough outer surface of the pod just wipes off easily leaving a thin papery pod with the seed inside which should be black by then.
Its been a bad year, weather wise.
Could you move the plant under cover if needs be, later on Kev?
its just a thought, but usually if you cut off the seed pods another flowering stem appears from just below. I think I can see them coming in the leaf joint .

Pete, yes i can put it in my greenhouse, what are you suggesting leave the seed pods on and move in the greenhouse later, when it gets a bit colder.

If nesessary Kev, ie. it gets too wet or frosty before the seed is ripe, but I would guess that those ones will ripen before then.

I had some seeds off mine last year, had to wait for them to dry on plant before taking them off, then in march I soaked them for a day then planted them, they are in my garden now but only about 7" tall. Probably grow bigger next year and flower. Not had enough sun this year.

As already mentioned, not all cannas produce seed that ripen. Lucifer and Pretoria do not,
Verdi and Sunny Delight definiely do as I grew 30 from seed sown last Dec and Sunny Delight flowered in July.
I have a yellow striped leaved orange flowered Tropicana one which has some very heathy looking seed pods. Division is the easiest method of increasing stock and the plants will be true to type, seed produced plants may be variable but then you might find an interesting 'sport'.

strongylodon, thanks for advise, so some produce seed pods which never ripen, so i could be wasting my time, the pods are realy loose, the slightest touch and they fall off.

Some of the pods are falling off, is it worth keeping them or will they definitely not ripen off the plant?

If they are falling off already Kev, then they have not set seed.
