I've just received some mail order Canna but I'm really not sure what to do with them? they came with potting instructions but I would of thought it's a bit early to be doing that? I presume there stored in trays of sand over winter? but I've got no room really to store them:scratch:

Could I just pot them up and put them in a heated glasshouse? would they flower earlier or be any worse off?

I would get them potted up early in a heated greenhouse. I used to do mine indoors to get them going early to get the height and flowers I wanted.

An early start is best in a heated greenhouse.

But it you you need to be careful as they can become too big too early, before its suitable to plant out.

I'd try storing cool but frost free for another month at least, personally.

Bearing in mind how the weather is these days.

Thanks Pete & Banana Man:gnthb: it's shouldn't really matter if they become to big as the college glasshouse is hue anyway and there's always the cold frame to harden off:)

    Warm rather than hot. :)

Something like max 16 degrees rather than central heating warm. What you want to avoid is them getting too tall too quick and then overwhelming themselves. Some of mine were huge and needed sustained steady growth to keep upright. Once they are growing you need to keep them growing .:gnthb:

Hi folks. I just opened my 3 packs of Canna's (one in each) and found that they were starting to shoot. Until now, they've been kept in my unheated greenhouse, and now I've potted them up, that's where they'll stay for now. I'm a bit concerned that they'll grow too fast if I keep them in heat. It's slow and steady for now. Cheers...freddy.
