Mrs H has a Mini Cooper convertible , bloomin' lovely car - except when it rains hard ! Then the alarm can go off, now and then. As the North UK now seems to have perma-rain , this has been a pain this evening , going off several times.
As a quick bodge I covered the infra red light , on the indicator stalk , with blue-tack. Will this negate an alarm that senses movement? Seems a bit simple it it does work.

    TIA

I doubt that will work to be honest Harry - normally, the interior sensors are pressure sensors that detect changes in air pressure within the car; the theory is that if a window is broken, or someone busts open a door, the air pressure will change and the alarm goes off. I suspect that the rain battering the canvas roof is changing the air pressure within the car and setting the alarm off.

On most cars nowadays, there is a button that you can disable the interior protection whilst still having perimeter protection (doors) enabled. Quite often, it is a button on the B-pillar on the drivers side that you press before you get out of the can and lock it. The car manual will tell you better though.

Mine says something about disable internal scan?????
Not sure what that is, but I assume its so you can leave say, a dog in the car, without it setting off the alarm.

That is exactly what it is @pete, and that is what I suspect is the cause of Harry's problem

Mine works through the "computer bit", when you switch the ignition off you get a message asking if you want the scan disabled, and you get 20seconds or so to push the right button.

Press it once to lock it and then press the lock button again within 10 seconds to disable the interior sensors.
Or lock the doors with the key. That doesn't set the alarm at all.

Thanks FC and Pete , two suggestions from the MINI forum after a quick search. I'll read it up in the manual tomorrow . They seem more elegant solutions than blue-tack !

Well the Mini manual was as clear as mud . I'll test the double press lock button this weekend by locking Mrs H in the car and see if she sets the alarm off

With a window slightly open if course, and not for very long, and never in hot weather.

Or if it gets stolen/broken into, will it negate your insurance if the premium was based upon it having an alarm that has now been disabled?

I don't think so , as you are using one of the OEMs alarm settings. Not even sure if the key lock button double press works yet . The UK manual does not mention it (or I can't find it ) The USA manual does

Is using blue-tack to cover a sensor a standard alarm setting? that's what I meant.

No the blue-tack ,as half expected , did not work. It would be a Sherlock Holmes of an insurance assessor to link a lump of blue tack to a frigged alarm anyway.

Of course, just something lots of people do, I dont have a dog now but my sister has always had atleast two and for a while three.
They have a rear grill fitted that is lockable so you can leave the tailgate open with the dogs in the back.
Which reminds me, she also has a Mini, could ask her if she knows how the alarm works, although the dogs dont actually fit into that one.

Have you tried switching the heater fan to 0 when you park up also closing the air vents. I heard a while ago open vents can mess up the internal air pressures(gusts of wind?)thus setting off the alarm.

Just spoke to my sister and she doesn't know how to disable the interior alarm on the mini.

Seems its one of BMWs mysteries, probably an optional extra.:)
