The carrots have grown better (in size at least) this year mainly as I put a ton of top soil in the raised bed but some are pale, almost cream in colour, distinctly green on top and even the red ones have little flavour, would adding fertiliser (Bonemeal?) or mushroom compost help.

The green shoulder is due to light, same as potatoes. What variety did you sow?

Sorry, I can't answer the question, but seeing as we're on about carrot colour, here's some useless but interesting (I think) trivia.

The original carrot colour is actually purple. The familiar orange colour is an accidental and totally unexpected consequence of selective breeding in cultivation.

Hi Strongy,we have just got back from our allotment where we have been digging up our carrots and we have at least four or five of those yellow ones out of our batch of Early Nantes.i said to Mr Kandy that I wonder if a different variety of carrot has accidently got in to the packet of Early Nantes and that is why some are yellow.

It is a shame that we can't see the colour of them first as they would be good to let go to seed and see if we can grow some more if the taste of them is good.

Can't remember if they are Suttons seeds or T&M varieties.

It's possible Kandy the seed was mixed, I was thinking it might be a nutrient problem but then they would all be that colour but some are red.

Browsing on a wet Sunday afternoon, as you do, I came across this:

Wonder if they've done a taste test?
