    Hi All,

Last year I grew carrots in large pots with compost and topsoil mixed and didn't do too well. This year I am putting them in the raised bed and was thinking do I need to mix some sharp sand in aswell. Any thoughts?

You can mix in some sharp sand (particularly if you are on a heavy clay soil!) But, it much depends on what your overall aim is ;) Personal use vs commercial growing.

If you are planting carrots to enter a gardening competition, I would advocate growing them in a higher than average sand content compost.

From my personal (albeit limited) experience, I just plopped some seed onto a raised bed just to see what would 'happen'. The 'appreciated' alright! (Clay soil)

Thanks mum. I am growing them just to eat not for showing. I will try as they are I can always pull up and put sand in at a later date if they are no good.
