    Hi

Well i have been one month on my new allotment i will complete one section by next week i have been on it every day for five six hours only lost a few days because of rain have had to dig down approx two feet to get all the mares weed out i guess 95% have been removed i will put a few pictures in after i have put the rotovator over it and level it.

My question is about carrots is it best to put them at a height of 30 in or more because of carrot fly or does one plant them in the ground with onions either side of them will the onions prevent carrot fly ???.

I've watched the allotment series on the discovery channels and some of allotmenteers grew them in those blue water tubs and had greater success than those planted in the soil so perhaps you could try growing them that way. When they pulled them they looked like shop bought ones, gorgeous.

Golfer, I hate to tell you this, but Mares Tale can root down to 3 metres. [IMG] As far as the the carrots are concerned, plant them in the ground, and if you put an 18" screen of fleece around them you will keep the fly from them.

I've always planted mine between rows of Garlic and this has seemed to work.

There has apparently been some success also if you make your own "Garlic Juice" by blitzing a couple of cloves of Garlic in a blender and mixing it with a pint of water then filtering it through a coffee filter.

Apparently if you give your carrots a regular spraying with this it works.

It may work or it may kill your carrots but it's just what I've heard. :D :D

Well the mares tail was down about 3 feet then you hit hard core thats the stuff they must have laid years ago this is on every plot so i have had 95% out obiously there may be bits left but it was hard going however finished my first section today it is approx 22ft x 20ft i have to add compost tomrrow had it from Swansea council free but cost £50 delivery we shared cost between three of us and had 15 ton good stuff all recycled waste so not bad 5 ton each for £17

Once this is in will put well rotted manure on top and then by Wed will put the rotovator over it after that will take a few photos to post however if anyone has a new back i will borrow it because mine is all aches agh.

My garden grown carrots are planted in 30" high raised beds, started last season and the results were amazing, One carrot fed 3 of us as a side veg. Did exactly the same with my parnips and had a bumper crop of them too [IMG]
