That's cool, had to google it to find out what they were!
Cinnabar moth apparently, I've seen the adults but never the kids

I had some ragwort which they love in one spot in my garden, they had a good time but the weed had to go so they all wriggled away.

          A bit late, I know.
I have ragwort here (I leave till it just starts seeding) specifically for cinnabars.
Problem is nobody has told them that the local snack bar is open 24/7/365.:sign0016::sign0016:

Hi all , something has been eating the new leaves at the top of my clematis shoots so just been out with a torch to see if I could catch it in the act.

Here it is just getting to top for its dinner  .Not a good picture but any one know what type of it is.

I can't see that very clearly @Dropmore but it looks quite similar to the large white butterfly caterpillar, or the green veined one. I had a few of the grn. veined butterflies last year in the garden for the first time since I've been here.
This is a good site for having a look, but there are quite a lot of similar types.

I'm sure someone will know - it's slugs that annihilate any new clem growth here though. Saves me cutting them back at this time of year right enough ;)

Thanks fairygirl , what ever type it was there must be more of them because more leaves have gone this mourning.
I cut my clematis back 3 weeks ago
And loads of growth since then.

Yes - ours are growing away now as it's been so mild again this winter. They aren't usually so quick off the mark, and I don't normally prune the later ones until about April, but I've trimmed a couple of bits and pieces on the ones that have been putting out new growth.
I've never had any caterpillars eating foliage though. Just the slugs...

Could be Privet Hawk Moth but it's a bit early for them, difficult to see from your photo

I wondered about that too @JWK - just because there looked like a definite 'head'. I've never seen one in the flesh though, and I don't even know if we get them round here, so I've no idea about timing.
Mind you - I haven't seen any caterpillars yet. Probably still too early for them in my area.
