Hi all I have planted a pile of herbs yesterday and pot them in the green hse for now. I plan to put some in the hse and some in a place next to the hse.Well closet place to the kitchen. My question is what are the best herbs or plants or ideas to keep cats from digging them up or messing in the bedding when the new plants come out into the garden.A couple of people have told me lemon balm and mint. But mint spreads so thought if the mint was in pots in or around the herb garden would this help.We have two male cats who are still hse bound for now till they settle in their home. So at some stage will investigate this small garden. So we want to try and sort something out before they go out if poss..any advice would be appreciated

Hi Kels....you could always plant some Nepeta...(cat mint/catnip )....hopefully to keep your 'boys' happy and away from your herbs:dbgrtmb:

I have had cats for 44 years, currently have three. They love herbs of all sorts .. they even love citrus as we live in the middle of orchards. We have three large pots of Nepeta in the garden and they avoid it like the plague. I have a lemon balm and various mints and the cats love them all. I cannot think of anything they do not like seriously.

Sorry, I can't give any useful information ... but then with cats I don't think there is any useful information to give.

The only positive thing I can say is that besides having an indoor litter box we have one in our outdoor living room (perhaps a conservatory there) and we have a 'sand garden' planted with sturdy shrubs (Viburnum, Myrtus tarantina, Iochroma, Cestrum elegans, etc, etc) and the cats love to roll around in there and don't bother anywhere else but whereas we thought they 'may' use it as a quick litterbox, they don't!

I just say, give them a space of their own and they won't bother anything else ...well, that has always worked for me!

Good luck and happy new home with yours. :cat-kittyandsmiley:
