my first post.think i'd best start with curing problems before making things nice.My garden is huge and full of various birds, field mice and other animals. We like it that way.How though,do we deter cats. Its a paradise for them.
I have heard curry powder or pepper will work, but not always. Are there any other tips which have a higher success rate?

Ive just found a different post ref. cats, sorry.
Although cats pooing is not realy my problem. Its cats hunting birds and field mice.I've already found dead mice around  (thankfully i found them, and not the toddler).

Hi. It's what cats do. You could try citrus peel spread around, it certainly keeps my moggie off of the places I don't want her to sleep in. (e.g. the sweet pea troughs), good luck

We go down this thread about every month or two.

I'm amazed orange peel keeps a cat off anything ... mine live in the orange orchards and climb the trees. These are not just my Portuguese cats who would not know anything different, but my English cats from day dot who came here at ages 11 and 7!

Mine, even the Portuguese ones, come into the house to the litter box when nature calls, unless they need a quick pee and I have a sand garden for that and must admit the borders are used occasionally by the little uns.

I'm afraid you can't train other people's cats, in my opinion.

Cats are cats as dogs are dogs ... and where do they pee and poo, I ask ???????? In a litter box?

Hi jj and LoL, it's not the fruit that keepsthem off, it's the zest. You have to cut the peel to release the scent. Hence orange peel and not the fruit. I work with chefs and they use the peel, not the fruit, to bring the flavour to the dish, all the best

All the folk around me eat oranges non-stop ... we personally only like it as juice .. but the neighbours walk around eating the various fruits (oranges, tangerines, mandarines, encores, etc) and fling the peel back into the orchard. And the fruit that is not picked and sometimes NONE of it is picked, drops to the ground and is as good as zest ... I can assure you.

My house is filled with the smell of orange blossom year round .. which is why I chose to live where I do.

I will never believe it deters cats ... fruit, juice, peel, zest ...

Just one person's opinion ... [IMG]

The only way orange peel will deter cats is keep it attatched to the orange and throw the orange at the cat. :D

Well, having disposed of the "zest" theory, if you ever see the cats, try zapping them with one of those pump-up water rifle things. That should make them think twice! ;)

Water rifles sound good cajary and isn't cruel - just makes the cat run! :D

We have found that garlic salt sprinkled liberally is quite a deterrent and really puts the moggies off - a quick sniff and they are off to find somebody else's garden :D .

Maybe you could sneak next door and plant cat-nip there, then they'd move in there! ;)
