Cauliflower

    I can seem to grow almost anything from seed BUT caulis are alluding me, why?

    Been using fresh seed and sowing compost, temp is roughly right, all my other brassicas are doing great...... what's the secret? :(

    To have any chance with caulis, the soil must be like concrete. If you have a lawn roller run that over the bed first.:gnthb: Also, this year the weather has been a bit too hot and dry for them.:old:

    The secret is grow them in fields, Vince.
    All round me they grow in fields by the acre.
    They do booga in anybody's garden.
    I think cauliflowers give off something which is conducive to other cauliflowers growing so they will grow in big areas but they hate to grow beside other plants so will not do well in gardens.
    I'm sure some of our horticulturalists will be along with a more scientific explanation or a total debunk but my experience is they do great in fields and rubbish in gardens,
