I do backups on rewritable disks rated at 10x speed, but my DVD writer is capable of much higher writing speeds. I understand that if you write faster than the rating of the disks, the results are unreliable.

Does my DVD writer recognise the rated speed of my disks and adjust its speed automatically. Using Nero utilities, it appears to do so as under the CD heading it quotes a read speed of 32x and write speed of 10x. And under the disk heading it does quote a speed - of 10x.

I am concerned as today I tried to transfer data to a friend's computer. I use INCD with Windows 98 and he has Roxio with Windows NT. His machine refused to recognise my disks - it just hung. Any suggestions? My machine happily reads the disk.

You may have to write a once only disk (CD-R) as this does not rely on having the In-CD software available. If given the chance (which I believe you are with Nero) write it as ISO.

Having started this thread I spent some time googling. I think you are right the method to use is write once only - not rewritable. I understand that the technology of rewriting may be flawed, and that curious things can happen.

I am still on Windows 98, and the INCD software is very easy to use but the write once only is not. But Windows XP is differant - there the write once only is easy.

All software for re-writable CD's is different. Nero and Roxio certainly differ, my Acer computer had Nti on it and is probably different from either of them.

I found Nti very easy to use. Now that I have changed to GNU/Linux OS, I shall have to try out the many DVD/CD writing softwares available.

I think that newer software is often easier to use. My feeling is that my version of Nero is old. In the early days CD writing techniques were new and the main part of the program was the engine that did the writing itself. When the next generation of software comes out the engine has often not changed much, but the emphasis has been put on improving the interface. In the past I used to write some software myself, and very aware how many improvements were being made in subsequent versions of software, at a time when the hardware itself was not changing.
