I'll apologise in advance but I live on my own so really don't have anyone to share my excitement with.

My lettuce, radishes, and turnips have sprouted! I know that this really isn't exciting to those who have been growing their own veg. for years but for a total beginner it's amazing! Lots of little green leaves popping out of the ground.

There's no sign of my beetroot or onions though (It's been a little over a week) so I'm not sure what they're up to.

A big thank you to everyone for the advice so far.

    :D

No need to apologise Anthony! It's great isn't it?
I still get excited when I see new sprouts coming through. I'm only in my fourth year of growing stuff so I suppose it might wear off, but I don't think so.
I'm very pleased for you, here's hoping for bumper crops and please stay excited (and I promise you there's plenty more to come - flowers, beans and peas, first meal...)

Onions are rarely in a hurry to show themselves - crack a beer, chill out and enjoy the garden. They'll turn up when they're ready ;-)

    cheers,

In my experience beetroot are a bit slower to germinate and a bit harder to spot when they first come through. Onions seem to germinate in a bit of a random way. You'll get a few showing and think that your crop has failed but then the rest come through later at intervals. Don't panic! I'm sure that the rest will come up in time. No shame in being excited about the first sprouts showing: we all get that feeling: that's why we do it!

Congratulations Anthony on your new babies{seedlings}:) You have to have patience and they will eventually show themselves. The onions are a little late, most of the growers start theirs off at the begining of the year butyours will probably just be a bit smaller.

Are you growing them indoors or outside?I often use the airing cupboard to get my stuff moving if they are a bit slow making sure I take them out as soon as they show through the compost.Good Luck with your seedlings:thumb:

Congratulations Anthony. Lovely feeling isn't it. Even after all these years I still get that warm feeling when seeds germinate. No gardener knows just how well or not germination of any seed is going to be until they come through. As others have said Beet take a little longer and onions are very spasmodic in getting going but all should appear sooner or later. Enjoy the moment!:D

I know how you feel...my radishes have started to grow, also chives....
some of the other veg I have grown from starter plants rather than seed, but you get such a sense of achievement when you see the actual SEEDS sprouting!!
    Well done!

Thanks for the replies everyone. It's such a good feeling coming home and seeing lots of green.

I forgot to mention that the onions are spring onions. I'm not sure if that makes a difference or not! :D
