Celery planting out

I am planting out my celery today-and have dug the trenches as per instructions-up to 30cm deep.


The seedlings are only about 4 inches high. So can someone tell me-do I just plant them in the trench and cover, oir am I back filling as they get taller and stronger?

It's many years since I grew celery but I used to put my plants in a trench and let them get established, say at least 6" high. Then I'd put loose collars round each plant (you can use wide strips of cardboard or plastc sheeting) to stop the soil getting into their hearts as I earthed them up progressively, like potatoes.

Celery needs a great deal of water and you need to keep those pesky slugs at bay. I tried so hard to keep them out but I'd lift a big celery plant that looked fine from the outside, only to find the slugs had eaten away most of those lovely little white shoots in the heart.

But the taste of home grown celery is soooooo much better than the supermarket stuff. It's worth the effort.
