    Ok. £1.99 for a 5lb chicken...and it's not just Tesco.

They are obviously ex-battery hens either from this country or elsewhere. What's all the fuss about....if you have a family to feed you have two choices...Organic Free Range Chicken for £9.00 weighing about 3lbs. Or a 5lb chicken for £1.99...what are you going to buy.

Do we really care where the chickens come from. If they are ex battery, should they just be incinerated or sold???

You're right Tweaky and I'm afraid a lot of people with young families to feed,
and all us poor old pensioners (sob), do not really have a choice but to buy the cheapest.

As fond as I am of organic free-ranging good quality food, in the end it´s tha cooking that matters! ;) We buy something expensive for special occasions, else we go along with what we can afford and since luckily I inherited good cooking abilities from granny and mom... we still eat nice and tasty.

Good point Ivory, but I'm sure KFC don't purchase free range or the other fast food places.

It's ok these poncy chef's coming on and telling us what we should and should not buy....but where do you draw the line.

I don't mind spending a little more for food - or a little less - when it is worth it, but often it is not...

I'm not sure on this, but I dont think the chickens that you buy for meat are the ex battery hens.
By the time they reach the end of their usefulness I dont think the poor things are edible.,
More likely used in maggot farms for anglers maggots.

The ones you buy for meat are more likely to reared especially for that purposee and force fed in order to get them as fat as possible as quickly as possible.

I know of a young couple who couldn't even afford a £1.99 chicken to feed their children
because they had bought computer games. How irresponsible is that?

And us 'poor old pensioners' - I think a lot of us are better off now than we ever were
    when we were working.
    ;)

I must say, I rarely eat meat, and about the only thing I will eat is Chicken.

With regards to which I buy, it is NOW, always Free range.

I don't think I will go right into what the chickens have to endure in such a short life before they are slaughtered, but I just don't think it is very humane

Please have a read through this site , to make your own opinion.

I seldom (never?) buy meat in "Special Offers" because they tend to be severely bad. It does not mean that I can always buy the best quality. Sometimes I do, SOmetimes I have to buy in a medium range.

I live on top of a hill, in a hydillic place that is however 40 km from the nearest decent town, neither me nor my hubby are very much the "going out" type, we don´t go to restaurants or clubs, we don´t have expensive cars or clothes. We live quietly eating well without breaking the bank, I have my garden he has his own hobbies, We chose to live with little somewhat simple, somewhat cheap, and really quiet and as stress free as possible. I don´t think these priorities are wrong. They may just be different from others´.

But why should chicken be so cheap?
Its a rediculous price, brought about by inhumane rearing of animals.

I know they lead the most horrid life, pete. I wish I could change that, I wish there was an easy solution to feeding the world without creating so much unhappiness. I don´t know how tho, and like any decent person I try to live at least halfway between the ideal and the reality. I buy chicken at the supermarket for a few euros, but I go get eggs at my neighbour´s, whose chickens rut all day in a lovely green meadow together with a duck, a goose and a goat. One hand for the world and one for myself. I wish I could do better. I also wish to stay alive tho.

worth 1.99 just for the laugh tweaky:thumb: you pay what price you want for a chicken lets hope they come down to a quid:D the price doesnt really bother me its the taste what counts thats why i only buy northern chickens as the others leave a nasty taste in my mouth. and with northern chickens the meat seems to be that little bit tougher than others;)

i may not be around on sunday i may have cold turkey...oh well have to go lady imp has made me a nice cheap chicken butty:D:D

Bah, I will conclude my contribution to this discussion with this: whatever chicken you buy...

Pat it dry, spinkle generously with salt and pepper, roast it in a real hot oven (220 ° C) until done (1 hour for a 1,2 kg bird) WITHOUT basting, take it out, cut in four parts, slather all over with its juices, some fresh butter and finely chopped thyme. Easiest and best roasted chicken ever. Buon appetito.
