I have a small ornamental cherry tree (about 5 foot). The leaves have started to go brown. Some of the leaves get small white blobs on them. I’ve monitored the blobs and they don’t appear to be insect related. I’ve cut the tree back and sprayed with anti fungal stuff. Any ideas as to what the disease is and whether it’s likely to be terminal?

I'd take a guess at Scale Insects.
Initially the egg cover looks like a tiny brown limpet with a hard shell.
Once the nymphs hatch all that's left is a white cotton wool like substance very similar to what you show in the photo.

I had them on the trunk of my Acer last year. I just washed them off with a hose then scrubbed off any that remained with a washing up brush. No harm was done to the tree, even after my treatment .

Thanks for your suggestions. The white blobs never hatch insects. The leaves with or without blobs turn brown and wither away. So far there have been no blobs of any colour on the branches only on the leaves

Can we see the whole tree and a pic of the leaf problem please? to help us id the problem.

PS another possibility at this time of year are leafhoppers it may be the remains of their eggs

Here are pics. You will I’ve cut it right back hoping that I’d stop whatever was happening. It didn’t. There are no white blobs this afternoon. I pinch the leaves off as soon as new blobs appear

        Thanks for the pics.
There's nothing I can see there that helps to give an answer.

        I don't think it's fungal.
I'd put 50p on it being insect related, but it's possible that it is insect related damage and then a fungus has got into the plant via the wound, but i think that unlikely.

Hopefully someone else will chip in

Many thanks Pete8. It’s a tricky one. I’ve searched the internet for clues but with a complete lack of success. I only hope that the tree doesn’t die

I would agree that its some kind of scale insect, if you look up crawler stage it might make sense, they are very tiny.
A systemic spray should sort them out.

Can you suggest a spray? I’ve only been using an anti fungus spray. Will the insects cause the leaves to turn brown and wither even when they’re not on the leaves?

Looking again at your pictures you seem to have hard pruned it in places, any reason why?
