I've researched that the best time to prune this climber is Spring, but I need to prune it as soon as I can really due to putting up a new fence.

If it's still flowering can this be pruned near to the ground without damaging the plant?

Lovely flowers - when you prune do not cut back into older wood. They like to be pruned little and often and also the long branches can be removed.

    Hi
Any chance you can detach from the fence and lay on the floor then put back on new fence , if you cut it hard at this time of year it may not grow back next year .

Thanks for the responses. The plant is well established, so hopefully if I cut it back to half the size hopefully this should be ok...?

Mine actually has a trunk and got out of control this year so had it cut back right into the trunk three months ago with no sign of greenery (I have it trained into a tree). It has suffered no damage and has grown back and is in full bloom again. I had one in Buckinghamshire and have had the one here for many years now and find I have to trim it back several times a year, but mine does bloom almost all year round.
