Chilli lack of heat ?

    Last year the first few Chillis off my Fuego and Hungarian Hot wax had no heat . Absolutely none , thye just tasted like a sweet pepper . later cropping though were very nice.
    This year the same again my Cayenne has produced its first red chilli - but no heat ? Is this normal do only the mid season chilli harvests have heat ?

    Harry. Your chillis are a lot further ahead than mine. However I read somewhere a year or so ago that the heat of the chilli depends on the amount of sunlight and the temperatures they are growing in, the warmer the better.

      Too early for a hot chilli. They also say keeping the watering down brings out the heat

        Well at the moment they get 14 hours of sun and heat in the spare bedroom - they will move to the GH soon as I have some room . They seem to be taking water by the gallon , I will try and be more frugal with the water .
        @Loofah is it best to pick the chillies as they are ready and taste test them until the heat develops , say early July ?

          I'd say it depends on how many flowers / fruit you have. As you're cropping already I'd pick them so more form but the later ones should develop more intense heat. The picked ones may develop more heat as they dry out.
          I'm no chilli expert, although the are a few on here, but think of it this way - the more you water the more you douse the flames! It's the stress that really brings out the burn.

          I'll stress them a bit then . I can hold back on watering until they wilt a touch . Also put them in front of the TV when England are playing in the world cup :biggrin:

            Doesn't heat depend on the variety at all?

            Chillies vary hugely over the 1000's of varieties . The heat is measured on the Scoville scale example below. Starting around 5000 for mild chilli up to 1.5 million for sub atomic chillies. My Cayenne should have nice heat at about 50,000 , and the Apaches are around 75,000

            Interesting to see Scotch Bonnet up there near the top. They are hot, but possibly not as hot as I'd have expected for the top five.
