@Loofah try standing pots on capillary matting in a large tray with the matting dangling over the side and into a tray of water. Should work well at that time of year with the plants not needing a lot of water.

Take them on holiday with you @Loofah, I've done that. The trick is to conceal them in your luggage ;)

I use the capillary watering system for my peppers, both inside and out in the greenhouses. The water "tanks" inside only hold 1.5 gallons - 6 liters but will keep the 2 dozen plants fed for two days so if you have a wide container something like one of those under bed storage units, that would hold lots of water and perhaps give you a chance. Would you be able to trust them in the walipini at that time? If it is warm enough, you could even rig up a rainwater collection to keep it full?

I understand there is a standard procedure to get things past customs. Just swallow them and re-pot when they re-emerge in the destination and repeat on the way back. (fighting hard to crack any fertilizing jokes here)

Two weeks will be just fine, put the seedlings in a large tub with an old towel in the bottom in the bath, wet the towel and nestle the pots so that they have a good contact with the towel.

Chillies are very draught tolerant so the dampness from the towel plus the cool, dark-ish environment inside the bath should keep them happy enough. They might get a bit leggy though, but hopefully you are used to leggy things in the bath.

              Happy travels! :)

I have not been able to look after my seedlings very well so far, if they survive I'll be surprised. I think the garage is too cold for them, although I can keep the roots warm enough with the heat mats the air is about 5c at times and I don't think they like it

Not sure I can be bothered starting again with them so I'll get some from the shops if necessary

Can anyone remember when the like of aldi etc get some chilli's in? Not expecting them soon of course.I had good luck with some from them years ago iirc

Can you find a 'pound shop' propagator clear cover to envelope the seedlings on the mat?

I did have a clear cover on but it also gets too humid then.

I've sown a few small pots from last year's chillies, currently in poly bags on the window sill. Will move to the heated trays in the greenhouse upon germination.
Also trying Marconi again, but I've never had any joy with it before.
I've ordered a mildish chilli plant collection from D T Brown, too, as him indoors is a wuss when it comes to chillies!

I've chucked some cayenne seeds in a prop in the utility room (warmest in the house) and will see how all the timing works out with holiday. Not the end of the world if I just buy some plants when I get back

The annual chilli-sowing has been done. Traditionally in this house, this happens on Valentine’s Day, but I thought I’d run a little earlier this year. Cayenne, habernero, hot wax, red cherry, ember explosion, fish, Amarillo, patio sizzle and Serenade. Who knows what will come up, as the seeds are a little old, but they won’t do anything useful in the seed packets!

so far I only have one variety up -Hungarian hot wax. These seeds came from a freshly opened packet, but I’ve not given up hope on the others yet. About to tent the seed trays, in the hope they will keep going whilst we are away for a fortnight. (Also seriously considering taking them with us….

Mine are in a 'double bubble', in a poly bag in the heated propagator.
I found a manky scotch bonnet from last year, so stuck those in, too.
I have 2 varieties to sow tomorrow, Bolivian rainbow, which is new to me, and Basket of Fire, which I know to be reliable.
I have been banned from buying anything else beginning with Chilli.
But I have a fresh pointy pepper and will be sowing seeds.

Not chillies but sweet peppers, put some of these in about a week ago.
