I have picked the Salvia seeds I would like to grow next year , from the Chiltern Seed site . This site is highly rated on GC. Just a couple of questions..........
1- Peculiarly they do not state how many seeds are in a packet ! I do not need a huge amount could I expect 40ish ?
2 - Why are Chiltern seeds based in Ulverston , Cumbria ?:D

    TIA

    :) Hello Harry

I have ordered from Chiltern Seeds for a couple of years and just recently bought some in their 25% off sale.

    1. Some do specifiy how many seeds you get, ie, like my Musa velutina said there are 10 seeds. What I find strange is that they come in small white packets with just the name on them, no instructions. :rolleyespink:

    2. I have wondered that too.

Harry - in a way it doesn't really matter. Everyone gives large amounts of small seeds and small amounts of large seeds.

They are based in Cumbria beause they have to be based somewhere. They are not much more than a husband and wife team - but I regard them highly because of their wide range. Like other companies, of course, they don't grow all the seeds themselves. They will buy seeds from wholesalers in other countries. What they do is package and resell them.

With regard to Salvia seeds, they are black and hard and have a shelf-life of many years even at room temperature. They should not be covered when you sow them as they need light for germination. Otherwise they will appreciate a bit of heat and should germinate in 10 to 20 days. They are very easy.

I've used Chiltern Seeds for years too and never had reason to complain, always generous amounts of seed provide unless otherwise stated; usually the larger seeds.

They include an in depth instruction leaflet with all orders that gives general instrcutions for different types of plants, trees, shrubs, perennials etc....and growing on advice once the seeds have germinated.

From what I can remember I have never had a bad packet from them, use with confidence

Me too Harry, very good seed quality & if there isn't enough seed you can always send for another packet, but to be honest I have never felt the need for more seeds there have always been plenty of them I found...

            I recommend them too!

Where applicable, they do include sowing instructions - otherwise sow as you normally would.

Thanks for the advice all - especially Steve on finding out the reason for the name ! I will most likely get more than enough seeds for my needs , so I will order from them in the new year.

                  Cheers

I've used Chiltern Seeds for years too and never had any problems with them. They often have seeds that are difficult to find elsewhere, so order with confidence.
