I am digging a largeish area of bamboo out of my garden, I know I have to get rid of the rhizomes & roots to stop it growing back but can I put all the canes through my chipper to make mulch from them without the risk of filling the whole garden with bamboo?

[IMG] Grib.. I see absolutely no reason why not.. Obviously not the roots & rhizomes, you will need to dispose of those in your green bin, but all the canes & leaves can be chipped..... Wear thick gloves & feed the canes in, not too many at one time so as not to clog it.. Leave them to weather for a month or so turning regularly, then spread as a mulch.. Happy chipping..!! :thumb:

I would be just a little careful if the bamboo is still very green when you chip it. Its very filamentous plant, so it may well just turn into mulch in the chipper. I would leave it to dry out a bit, and then try a cane to see how well it works first.

I'm probably just being over cautious, but wouldn't you rather that than a broken chipper?

:) We have chipped bamboo and added it to the compost heap and had no problem but i agree dispose of the root areas elsewhere. Good luck though with digging out the root areas - VERY tough challenge! I have never had much success digging it out in fact it has beaten us completley and we control the spread by cutting it and chipping it now. Perhaps you know of someone with a JCB!!

Save a few of the long canes, they always come in handy for plant supports.

Watch out for splinters grib, wear good gloves like Marley says, bamboo splinters can be very nasty.
