I have never bothered too much with these plants because they tend to flower at the end of the season. Any that I have acquired have been slotted into a bed and maybe flowered but nearly always killed off in the winter, never to appear again. I am probably doing it all wrong. Last year someone gave my wife a pot full of really handsome blooms that almost looked like the tropical anemones that I used to have in my marine tank.(that is no more). after they finished flowering I put them into the greenhouse for the winter and then last Spring I planted out the four plants into a raised bed. They have grown beyond my expectations but not a single flower bud appeared. I would like to do better next season. I suspect that I should have cut them back at some point but did not. Any advice would be most welcome Thanks Stony
I think you really need to buy cuttings from specialist growers/ nurseries, if you want to grow outdoors. They will have hardy outdoor varieties that flower a bit earlier. I think Chrysanths are one of those plants that bud up when the day length is right. So you need ones for outdoors that bud up early.
Chrysanthemums (there are over 100 species) - so not sure which you have. Sage advice from pete - get a hardy variety. They are in the same family as Rudbeckia - so I'm assuming are similarly cut back when the blooms have finished .
Last I bought a 9cm pot of bulk standard chrysanthemums from a garden centre (possibly dobbies). I repotted them and left them out all winter. They have come again lovely this year. G.
