What's everyone going with for their Christmas day main course this year?

I was planning a standard turkey but pondering other options such as goose or beef rib

Turkey as everyone likes it, not sure the grandchildren would like goose and definitely not beef. My Mum used to do a goose dinner, it was lovely. If your kids are less faddy than mine then it would be good to have something tasty.

No main course here as we take a picnic out to escape Christmas Day. We stayed in for the first time in years last year and hated it. This year's location is Glen Affric. :)

Last year we went to our local ALDI shortly before closing shop for the Christmas days. They had a ton of stuff for half price due to the upcoming "best before" date. We bought a ton of duck breasts.

Those were the best ones I ever made and ever ate. Slowly baked them at 140°C in the oven after marinading them for the night in a oil/herb mixture. A sauce made from the duck fat, together with water, roux and a slight infusion of smokey whiskey. They just melted on your tongue and we ate until we could no more.

I will definitely go back to that shop again this year and see what kind of "leftover" treasures are waiting there for me to try.

No way I could leave the organisation until the day before @Black Dog ! Does sound like it worked out well though.

It's a good point about the kids. They are super fussy (her more than him) so probably safest to go the turkey route. I can still buy goose fat for the spuds:)

I don't usually cook for Christmas as, apart from Covid times, we are always away travelling for Christmas/New Year (our main annual holiday) and have whatever was served wherever we were. Our last Christmas away we were in Mandalay :rolleyespink:

They did a buffet and some grilled fish from the river or, for the Philistines :heehee:, steak. You can see that they did turkey :)

This Christmas we shall be having one of the older people round (old even for us :old: :heehee:) that we do meals on wheels for (we just cook extra either on Saturday or Sunday, depending on what we're doing). She will be on her own as her family live in Norway.

I shall be doing leg of lamb marinated for 24 hours in a marinade of onion, garlic, ginger, cumin, coriander, paprika (not hot), ground almonds, oil and water. Then roasted in the oven with nice crispy potatoes, sliced brussels stir fried with just a touch of shallot and ginger and toasted sliced almonds, green beans tossed in melted butter and lemon juice.

We like a nice quiet Christmas, so the traditional turkey roast serves us fine

Often Americans do not have turkey for Christmas as they will be having it today, Thanksgiving. Very often it is a ham joint with the same trimmings and in The South (where we lived) it will include sweetcorn and cornbread. We don't really celebrate Thanksgiving but usually have turkey of some sort. Today we actually have a large chicken breast which we will have sliced with fresh made mushroom sauce, potatoes and sweetcorn.

                          That's a good question:
My Grandaughter Kat will only eat Beef and pigs in blankets without the blankets:whistle:
                          My daughter likes Turkey/Chicken.
                          Myself I like Pork/Gammon/Lamb.
As I'm cooking:mute: it will probably be Turkey & Beef...........Roll on Boxing Day:please:

I will be serving my traditional dressed turkey, mashed spuds, variety of vegetables, lots of gravy and cranberry sauces. Dessert will be pumpkin pie/whipped cream and apple pie/vanilla ice cream. And trays of cookies and Christmas cake for snacking.

I serve ham at New Years and it is usually buffet style/casual help yourself dining.

I love it but T'other Half does not. I just had pate on toast for lunch plus a piece of toast with butter and pumpkin jam on it since we don't eat desserts.
