Hi folks. My late father used to grow these. Not the 'regular' ones, but the proper show blooms. He grew hundreds of them and they really did look good, lasting for at least two weeks in a vase. Only one thing bothers me, are they worth the effort ? All that 'stopping' at the correct time, removing the side-shoots, bagging up the blooms (white and yellow ones). I have noticed that they have never got a mention on here, and thought maybe that they aren't worth the effort. I am undecided as to whether or not to give them a go. Any thoughts ? Cheers...freddy.

Definitely worth it, Freddy. Done properly, as you`ve obviously seen, they are stunning. And so satisfying to see them on the show bench. And the same applies to Dahlias.

    "are they worth the effort"

Its a hobby, or an obsession, depending on your viewpoint! When I was in Japan they looked absolutely FANtastic!

    This is a SINGLE plant:

Hi folks. Well, I've ordered up a collection of 12 Chrysanths from Elm House Nurseries, those that can't be mentioned :) Why is that ? Here's the link http://www.elm-house.co.uk/chrysanthemum-bloom-duo-pack-pid2216.html Anyway, looking forward to some nice blooms. BTW, is it just a case of 'stopping' and taking out the side-shoots allowing just 4 blooms per plant ? Cheers...freddy.

Depending on what plants you`ve gone for, Freddy, also wether or not you are going to show them. If you have the likes of decs and are just going for colour in the garden, then go by your methods. If you want to show, then I would suggest you buy a decent book on it.:gnthb:

Hi Dai. Depends what plants I've gone for ? Did you not check the link ? I dunno what's meant by 'decorative'. I don't intend to show them, just want some nice blooms for cutting. Cheers...freddy.

Hi again. The Chrysanths are doing ok, but on one of the plants I notice that flower buds are forming. This is of course too early for the formation of buds, so, what should I do ?
    Cheers...freddy.

Hi Freddy, I expect your plants were already stopped when you got them, you let four side shoots grow up and get buds ,when they are big enough to handle you take them all out except the one you are going to keep.thats just the idea ,get a book about it from the library. My Uncle used to grow them for the Colliery Chrysanth and leek show,Marvelous .

Hi folks. Some of my Chrysanths are now flowering :) A couple of pics.....

They're not 'show' class, but perfect for the vase. Dunno though if I'll grow them again next year as one can only expect 4 blooms per plant, which isn't much compared to Dahlias. I'll have to see how much space is going spare.

    Cheers...freddy.
