Chutney recipes

    I have a large amount of tomatoes in the greenhouse that I need to use up. I was thinking of making some chutney. Does anybody have any good recipes?

    I would also like to make some other chutney for Christmas, not necessarily tomatoe based. Does anybody have any good recipes?

      Like the look of the above recipe @Fern4 so good on FC as well. I am going to make it over the next wee while as no doubt like many I have a fair doze of green/orangey tomatoes which we will never get round to eating fresh as still wading our way through red ones. Have already frozen about 20 kgs of red ones. My "snag" is that I don't have loads of jars to keep the chutney in as have tended to throw jars out. I am not a jam maker or a chutney maker previously (not really that keen on cooking). My question is, I have loads of old plastic Mackies (yummy) 2ltr plastic ice cream tubs, could I put the made chutney in those? They are pretty airtight. Then either store in the fridge or freeze? Maybe the chutney wouldn't mature very well if in the freezer? I don't particularly want to go down the route of Kilner jars as my makings may not be to the families liking (they like the good old Branston Pickle) so this making could be a 1 off:) but thought I'd at least try as have my own Apples , onion and obviously Tomatoes!

      Hi @silu, I've never tried to freeze chutney. I always use glass jars as they need sterilising to prevent the chutney going off.
      I put some green tomatoes in a cardboard box with a ripe banana & they turned red, perhaps you could give that a try & maybe make some tomato soup, that will freeze really well. :blue thumb:
      I've been known to ask the neighbours/work collegues for old jam jars before, it's amazing how many you end up with.

          @silu ...it's a nice spicy chutney and it's better the longer you leave it. I've only made chutney once before using a different recipe (too sweet) and when I tasted this one when it was still quite warm, I was shocked at the vinegary hit at the back of my throat. I thought I'd messed up somehow but when I tasted it when cold it was much better. After a few days the flavours knitted together even more and I've been eating it with everything :snork:

            For Christmas I always make delia's Christmas chutney, from her Christmas book. You can get it online. It's made with dried apricots and other dried fruits but sadly doesn't use up any of my apple or tomato glut. There's an orange and apricot one too, really good with cold meat

              Made the Delia Smith recipe that Fern4 supplied today. Thanks very much. I misread the recipe and bought All Spice instead of pickling spice (not a clue what pickling spice is!). Undaunted I added an oz of All Spice to the rest of the ingredients and much to my surprise and the family's:) my 1st effort at making chutney is really rather nice . I halved the quantities as didn't want to make loads and then find it was foul, but am going to make more as requested by husband and daughter, wonders will never cease or perhaps beginners luck. The only thing I'd say about the recipe is that you don't really taste the Garlic so may add a few more cloves in the next batch. Many thanks, maybe there is hope for me yet to be WI material...... hmm as I am just polishing off a large whisky and was swearing like a trooper at 1 of the cats who had bought a live mouse into the kitchen a few minutes ago, maybe not!

                No need to freeze chutney, just keep it in air tight jars or containers, store it in a dark cool place and it last for a few years if you've got lots and it improves with age. Mine does anyway.
