    Welcome to Gardeners Corner Thom,

As much organic stuff as you can, clay is very fertile but a pain to garden with.

    Ashes, leafmold, spent mushroom compost.

      Hi

And welcome to the forum , digging clay soils at the right time of year makes it a lot easier, best time I have found is very early Autumn or late March/April when it starts to dry out a little , advantage of clay holds water and normaly rich in plant foods , down side getting it suitable to grow plants in, if it was my borders where I grow perenials I always mix grit in which helps to open the soil up and mix anything organic I can get my hands on also I have found double digging helps with opening up the soil, others on here will add more sugestions .

        Evening Thomas and welcome.

I had the worst, most depleted, most compacted clay soil ever when I first moved into my current house two years ago. I followed Zig's advice about the spent mushroom compost, and now I have good soil. It is quite a lot cheaper than many alternatives too.
