I will be starting the 'big sow' this weekend, pressing into use my four new sets of shelving; these are 5-tier, plastic shelves (remarkably sturdy), which have enough height to take seed trays with lids or even home-made 'tent' style covers made with some plastic sheeting that I have (I have tons more trays than I have lids), however I was wondering if I might be faster/easier to cover each 'cell' of the shelving with the plastic sheeting?

So, rather than having three or four trays on a shelf with individual sheeting/lids, simply seal each side of the shelving with a single sheet (taped on, so it can be opened for watering), with the result looking like a sort of mini poly tunnel?

The sheeting I have is currently diffuse, so whilst letting light through, it wouldn't necessarily be 'direct' - if I heat treat it, it should go crystal clear, but I am wondering if the slightly diffused light might actually be better?

    Hi FC,

That sounds similar to the set up I use in my bedroom. I have one of those four shelf thingys ( like a tiny greenhouse ? ). I seal every shelf separately, making sure I can open them from the front, so it creates four little compartments.

I use clear plastic. As to you , it depends on whether they are in direct sun or not. I personally think seedlings need all the light they can get.

They will be starting out sat at our French doors which gets full sun all afternoon, but then it is only March. I will get the shelves up and the seeds sown and go from there I think. Thanks @Anthony Rogers

That sounds similar to mine. Mine get afternoon sun.

Forgot to say earlier on , but, doing them like this means that you can start cuttings off in there as well as it's easy to just mist them and then being enclosed it helps to keep the humidity in. Works brilliantly for Fuchsias :)
