My Dad's got a large roll of clear plastic tarpaulin stuff that you would use for a ground sheet when camping for example. Would this be good to heat/prepare the soil on my veg plot? Would it 'cook' weeds?

It will be good to heat up the soil prior to sowing, it won't ever get hot enough to cook weeds even at the height of summer in this country.

Okay thanks, if it doesn't cook the weeds I hope it doesn't help them grow/germinate instead!

It probably will :snork: That is a good thing, so you can then hoe the weeds out before you sow/plant :dbgrtmb:

Haha, I suppose so. There's tons of celandine on the plot which is a right hassle.

I wish there was an easy way to get rid of it!

SBK! that'll KILL everything, just a pity you have to wait 6 weeks before you plant in the same area! :'(

Clear plastic will help warm the soil a little as it keeps the wind chill off. If you want to heat soil, black plastic would work much better. Black would heat soil to encourage weed growth to start but would then block light and prevent photosynthesis and the weeds, or most of them, would die.

              Thanks all for the info.

I've got some of this: http://www.bayergarden.co.uk/en/data/Products/g/Glyphosate-Ready-to-Use-1-litre.aspx

I'm going to be planting pumpkin and squash where all the celandine is. If I used the Glyphosate and then covered with the clear plastic would the weeds be dead and gone and the soil be okay to plant in by the time I put the veg in?

Off the top of my head it'll be a month or two before the veg go in.

Roundup will do the trick, but the celandine needs to be actively growing for it to have effect. I would cover with plastic first to encourage all the celandine to start growing then pull back the plastic in a few weeks time then spray and re-cover. The celandine should take 3 or 4 weeds to die off, so if you're planning to plant pumpkins/squash in late may/early june you have to work back from that date. Roundup becomes inactive when it hits soil so it won't affect your following plantings. Just be careful when you spray, roundup kills anything green so avoid a windy day.

I'm guessing Roundup is pretty similar the Beyer Glyphosate stuff I've got?

The celandine is already growing well, some are on the cusp of flowering, they're prerty well established already

Oh yes, sorry - Roundup is a Trade Name for the same glyphosate based product.

Sounds like your celandine are ready to spray.

I gave them a spray last night, hopefully the glyphosate will work it's way down to the tuber/root bit at the bottom quickly. PLEASE!

As the Celandine is growing steadily the glyphosate will work - but it's not quick, it takes a good few weeks to kill off the roots completely, but it will certainly do the job.
