Hi guys I'ave cleared a huge pile of old compost which was a good couple of tons at least which was a present from the last owner of our house. [IMG]

Now I'm getting ready for my first greenhouse 'ever' and I'm really excited about it the only problem is that the site in near a hedge but the site does get an awful lot of sun so that's no really a 'problem' if you know what I mean.

The problem is how far away from the hedge do you suggest I should put the greenhouse as it's pretty tight the area where its gotta go, I'm only getting a 8 x 6 but I will need to get round it to cut the hedge...any ideas?

Morning Helen. I'm putting up my new greenhouse next spring and it has to go near a fence to the west. Even with a fence I shall leave as large a gap as the site will accommodate because that horrible creosote substitute will have to be sprayed on every few years. Hedge cutting is more regular so I would definitely want as big a gap as possible.

    Hi Helen!

My greenhouse arrived yesterday! I was told to expect 4 weeks and it was a surprise as I only ordered it last weekend! Shouldn't complain really but I had planned on getting the site done at a leisurely pace - now I just wanna get on with it!! [IMG]

Like you, I have a hedge. I also have a manhole cover in the centre of my plot which I have to work around. Planning to have the GH as far from the hedge as I can - like John says - which will leave enough space to get down the side and trim the hedge. Think it will reduce algae aswell.

Good luck with yours! I'll post some pics of mine on my 'To greenhouse...' thread!

Hi all, my greenhouse is about 18" away from the fence which has a mature honeysuckle growing on it, I cut the honeysuckle hard back once a year after flowering, until then it is acting as shading. David.

Helen make sure the hedge doesn't shade the g/house too much in winter, shade isn't a bad thing in summer but it could be damp and cool in there winter time, also consider flagging the whole of the inside or lay the entire structure on flags it is easier to keep clean and pest free, you can grow everything in pots or growbags, you would have too much root penetration from the hedge if you tried to grow in the greenhouse borders.

Thanks Walnut I was thinking of using some old paving slabs with have knocking around for the centre aisle and then maybe having some weed matting down and covering it will gravel.

Would that be a good idea?

Also Bob's going to build the base with bricks and put a wooden frame on top so we don't have to buy a frame base (if you know what I mean) as we have the bricks from another little job Bob was doing and it makes the pennies go further.

That sounds good helen make sure you get a good quality weed matting and cover it with about 4" of gravel.

Looking good Walnut, wish I had room for a poly tunnel, although I might be getting another greenhouse next year if things work well with this one...one each for me and Bob! :D

Still looking for a greenhouse 'think' I might have found one a Hall's 106 if I can squeeze it in.

It doesn't seem sensible nor pennywise to have two little greenhouses I think I'll go for one big one, if it seems too big for the garden I can always screen it off.

    What do you guys think?

Bigger the better Helen you can always hide it like this.

Nice photo there Walnut and that seems a much better idea than using a trellis to 'hide' the greenhouse behind which would of course take away some light which is not ideal...so pots are the way to go! ;)
