New to this, only started gardening last year and put several clematis in. Have just been looking at them and they've got buds!! Ville de Lyon and Marie Boisselot. Should I put a blanket (or whatever's the gardening equivalent)on them tonight so the frost that's supposed to be coming doesn't kill them??

I wouldn't worry too much about them. Clematis are generally hardy - and should reshoot if cut back by frost. Wind may be more of a problem - and new foliage may scorch with severe frost.

Can you fashion a wind break or similar for them

We have been known to get frost in July without any obvious damage to even flowering Clems!. As Fran says, wind scorch can be more of a problem, though usually only to the evergreen or slightly more tender C. balearica cirrhosa types.

Thanks both, have gone and tied them to stop the wind ripping them to bits.
