Hi, the leaves on my clematis montana are turning quite brown and mottled . Its in a container , Could it be slugs they are climbing behind the trellis up the wall, i`m been removing the little blighters each day into the wheelie bin

Hi Dancing queen,I have 2 montanas in containers and one in the ground, slugs show no interest whatsoever in them even though they are ever present. [IMG]
The only thing that I make a point of doing with my clematis plants is keeping the roots cool and out of sunlight, how much this affects their growth I don`t know.
I`m sure somebody out there will be able to diagnose exactly what the problem is [IMG]

We have a few viruses and fungi that hit Clematis around here. Some types and cultivars seem more susceptible than others. I use a soil drench systemic fungicide (Bayer All-in-one)and that has stopped the problems. Spraying can be effective but remember you have to protect the new growth. Any leaves that are already browned or spotted will not be cured.

It could be Clematis Wilt. Iwas told to cut it down to the ground and let it try again, amazingly, it worked!!

Slugs would eat it, not leave it brown and mottled. Doesn't sound like its wilting...collapsing. Is this brown like....crisy brown? How big is the container and does the sun shine on the container? Clematis like their roots cool, so I am wondering whether the roots have plenty of cool soil to run through or whether they are confined and are being cooked through the sides of the container. Symptons would be crisp browning of the leaves and poor growth....shoots would be short and woody, rather than vigorous and lush.

Some of the mottling could be due to honey dew perhaps. That is where aphids expell sugary solution and then mould grows on it. I think the roots will get a bit cooked in a container that size, particularly as its plastic.

:)Gardening is full of dissapointments,in fact you must be prepared for them........but the joy and sucsesses far outweigh these events.
I just had eight peppers in single pots on the greenhouse staging and the slugs climbed up and scoffed the lot....put it down to experiance, you cant win them all.....you are not alone :D
