    Hi All,

I bought 2 Clematis about 2/3 years ago, one of them has flowered every year and has buds now, this one is in a sunny position and gets sunlight for most of the day.

The other is is semi shade at the bottom of the garden growing through a hawthorn tree, it has plenty of growth but has not flowered at all, it does get direct sunlight later in the day.

I am sorry but i cannot remember the names, i can post pics if these will help, a friens has suggested cutting hard back the one that has not flowered, now before i go and masacre it i thought i would ask the experts on here if this is a good idea.

    Thanks

If you can't remember the names, can you tell us when they flower? That will give an idea of the group they belong to and therefore when it's best to prune them.

The one that flowers will be a Montana - there's another thread about them. They don't need pruning much, more of a trim after flowering.

The other one could be anything! There are loads of varieties of clematis!

Hi Brackenbeds2. as Sussexgardener said there are loads of varieties of Clematis. there are over 200 different species plus a great number of hybrids that have been cultivated over the years, so it is difficult to say exactly how many species there are .
There is one thing with Clematis i have been informed to remember, is they like "warm head-cold feet ". the Clematis requires full sun but the roots must be kept out of full sunlight.
it is a wonderful display when in full bloom , well worth the effort. your pink Clematis could be in the "Nelly Moser" variety . music .
