I have several Clematis Montana ranging from 4 to 14 years old. The oldest one started the Spring well, produced a few flowers but is now wilting (leaf tips going black). One other started to produce leaves but they wilted, but the others have produced no leaves at all. Would this be Wilt ? They are all in different positions in the garden which makes me doubt it is Wilt, and I have never seen this problem before. I have other varieties which are doing fine. Should I just leave them, or cut them down, or what ?

Hi Vicki, and welcome to the site. It does sound like Clematis wilt, and I would suggest cutting the affected stems back to ground level. It isn`t usually fatal, and the plants should regrow.:thumb:

It would be better if you posted this in general gardening or perhaps pests and diseases.

    However, I agree with David.

Hello and welcome to gc vicki, sorry I'm not very good with clematis, I tried when I first moved into our present house but they did not do very well so I just gave up. Good luck with yours.

[IMG] Vicki welcome to the forum. I really like the lovely Montana had a couple at our old house and even though one grew almost trunk like I was still able to hack it back and it came back even better than before, hopefully yours will be able to recover as normally it takes an awful lot to harm these strong plants.Hel.xxx.
