Not sure a picture would help on this one.

I planted it about 7 years ago and it got wilt so I left it in. on a couple of occasions it has made a brave attempt at re surfacing, but this year it has gone mad, but has never flowered so I don't know what it is and how to prune - so I havn't done anything with it and it is now taking over.

what do I do and how do I identify???

Bit difficult without a flower I must agree. Pruning is easy, wait and see. If it is a non pruning one, like alpina or macropetala then it may well flower next spring. If it is a mid season one, then again it may well flower next year, but in any case non pruning will do no harm. If it is the type which needs pruning down to the ground in early spring/later winter, then the pattern of new growth should give you an indication of that. All the new growth will come from the base of the plant, in that case you could then prune off the top growth, just a little later than normal. Again if you did, nothing it would not really matter, except that you may have a bit of a bird's nest to sort out the following year.

YEs its already a lot of a birds nest! If I prune wrong it won't flower and if it does not flower which it has not done for two years, then I can't identify.

Its all a bit chicken and the egg. It does not even seem to be making buds yet, so not very hopeful for it flowering at all this season, it just looks such a mess, but will persivere.

    Its starting to flower!!!!!!

From looks of it may be a Jackmanii, but as I have one of these in the garden it is unlikely I would plant two the same?

will post pics when in full bloom - seems everso late, all very odd.
