Is there any way i can make my clematis plants(sorry dont know type) bushier, as last year they seemed to have the height but no width as they were there to try and conceal part of the fence. any advice appreciated.

When do they flower? That determines the pruning regime you see. otherwise you could get a bushy plant but no flowers!

If you prune them hard in Feb/Mar to 12 or 18 inches, you should make them bush out. Its a bit late now but it might still be possible. This is recommended for all new plants, irrespective of their normal pruning requirements. As Palustris says if it is an early flowering type you might have to write off the flowers for this year. But you will reap the reward in future years.
