There is a large clump of this growing in the Florida garden. I think it is actually a climber but it is sprawling around all over the place at the moment. A lady in a nursery told me it is called Bleeding Heart, but it looks so different from the Bleeding Hearts that I know from Europe. Whatever, it is very pretty.
That is absolutely stunning, Sis. I've never had luck with Clerodendrons but I wouldn't mind having a go at that ... hint, hint, hint ... :luv::luv::luv:
Vicky, unless you can keep a minimum of 10/12c in winter C.Thomsonii will not survive, they don't like cold winds either. I guess there is no harm in trying.
Hi strongy ... I can't keep that minimum but I am protected by the orchards and I have many 'rooms' in my garden, some more protected than others. We don't suffer from cold winds although I have a 'frost' pocket which gets a small hit for a few hours for a couple of days .... which is where I would not plant it. I just love climbers. As you say, if Sis can get seeds or a rooting to bring me in January ... I can but try.
There are a few other varieties, two are all red and one, Ugandense is powder blue. I have seen them in Tenerife and Madeira, they are all worth a try if you can find them.
The winds this year played havoc with my C.thomsonii. I've given it to my sister now. C.speciosissimum is a beauty..............
Isn't it just! A kindly member on another forum has some spare seed which they popped in the post for me.
My sister (Kedi-Gato) has sent me seed of hers from Florida ... but I have tried twice with no success. I think she is bringing a root back to Germany when she returns late January to post to me. Sometimes Sis and I think we can grow the same things Portugal - Florida but she is so wet and humid there and me so dry here that it just doesn't work. But we continue to try to swap and keep each other going in the things we both love ... :yess:
Catztail - C.ugandense................. Victoria - Clerodendrums do have a bit of a thirst, so maybe not so good where you are:wallbang:
