I'm recording it 'cos my wife is watching yet another programme about house make-overs. We made the mistake of getting a Sky dish. Grounds for divorce?

I trust you found the programme as interesting as I did. I too taped it - and will tape the next one too.

A tad frightening the speed of change. I still have the transcript from Channel 4s programme on Global Dimming a couple of years ago - which demonstrated a lowering in light levels, accelerating the Co2 bit of our climate change. Not sure that it is reversible now - gonna be some rough times ahead.

Keep going Paladin - every little bit helps. Its an evolving science - so who knows, if every everyone in the developed world did their bit things could improve.

Correction to my comment about global dimming - its been masking global warming rather than accelerating it (well it was a few years ago). Particle pollution reflecting back the suns rays - but also itself causing climate change, thought to be the cause of the severe drought in Africa in the 70's and 80's by its cooling effect, stopping the normal monsoon rains.

I think I'd find it easier to be convinced that the action of man is causing this if the "experts" were a little more credible.

Most of them seem to have read a book and become experts overnight whilst still in their teens. A 12 year old girl was lauded as an eco councellor on TV the other day.

What channels are you watching Rich :D The ones I was watching seemed pretty well qualified - and the research was pretty robust - no 12 year olds there.

Where global dimming was concerned - the four year research on the Maldives, the independant findings on pan evaporation was pretty conclusive for me.

Where global warming and its causes, natural climate change, with or without mans contribution to rises of Co2 looked pretty robust as well.

    We shall see eh :D

Global warming is nothing new, its just the cycle of our earths evolution. It would happen regardless of our enthusiastic contribution and will recover as it has before, over and over again! Theres no water shortage, we are drinking the same water cave men washed in and in this country we have been desert, rainforest, ice cap and ocean. So chill out everyone its all good, we live on a volatile planet, and it is alot less fragile than people give it credit for. :D

Yes the planet does go through cyclic changes and yes we have had warm phases and cold phases and that will continue. It is the rate of change that is the problem - our problem. It is caused by ourselves and will affect ourselves - "as ye sow, so shall ye reap" and we shall reap the whirlwind. The planet is not in danger - we are. The earth will recover from our abuse, but in so doing it must shed the malignant parasite that infests it. Ourselves

Indeed, I agree. Can't say I am too concerned about us, we've had a pretty good run! and the permitted oppression and hedonism that is characteristic of our mature capitalist system will end us long before nature does.

Great, more Gaia enthusiasts! We have trodden too heavily and deserve to be shucked off- unless we learn fast.
Banana Man, do you not fear for your baby?

Agree, Banana Man, gobal warming is nothing new in the great scheme of things.

Also the experts are not always right and over-exaggerate. Not saying we humans don't have any effect but seems the 'experts' are on a roll, each trying to outdo each other in doom and gloom.

Being rather older than many GC members, I remember when my children were quite small we were told a new ice-age was imminent and that there would be power cuts etc. etc. Factories and offices would have to go on short time working to preserve energy needed for heating, lighting and using machinery, in fact things would almost grind to a halt!
In great trepidation I bought a couple of oil lamps and a small supply of lamp oil in readiness for the dreaded time. What happened? Not a lot.

So you see, although I try to recycle things, save energy and water, I am not entirely convinced by these so-called experts.

Definately, but we are very naive if we think things will change. All I am saying is that climate change regardless of how we accelerate it is an inevitable part of this planets evolution. In the short term we should be more concerned about foriegn policy and human rights than a planet that can take care of itself. We can meet our carbon emissions till the cows come home but you will always have countries too many to mention that do not give 2 hoots. Expressing this opinion on a macro scale has nothing to do with how I personally reconcile my footprint on this planet! I just don't have a holier than thou opinion that I shame other people with that is both unachievable and frankly speculative.
