I would like to cover up a wall in my garden which is on my patio I wondered if I would be able to grow a climber rose in a large pot to cover this wall, I have tried a clematis in a pot but it is not doing well or is there some other shrub I can put in a pot that would do the job.

Depends how big you need the rose to grow and how deep a pot you can provide. Don't see any reason why not, I planted one in a pot last year which seems to be doing well so far. I'm hoping it will get to about 6ft high and 3 or 4 ft wide which my garden centre assured me it could in the pot I chose.

Alternatively, I have jasmine which is quite vigorous and I don't think uses much root space as it's in a fairly shallow raised bed and has amazed me at the size it's grown, likewise an evergreen honeysuckle. I have a campsis which has been growing in a half barrel for at least 15 years and of course if you're desperate you could go for an ivy, a russian vine or a virginia creeper but they would completely cover the wall.
