I have just dug out Shineys post from April this year , where he mentions that beans can be grown as an ornamental flower with a plate of veg at the end ! Sounds like a fantastic idea for one of my flower beds with an 8ft fence at the back . Can any of you veggie gurus recommend a climbing bean with a nice flower and bean . How long would they flower for when would they crop ? I have never grown beans before so nothing to exotic or difficult please :D
Shiney if you read this post , do you have any pics of your flower bed teepees ?

    TIA

Harry, all the runner beans have attractive flowers, most varieties are red (hence the name scarlet runner) but Sunset and Celebration have pink flowers, Painted Lady and St. George are red and white and finally Wisley Magic & White Lady are white flowered. The scarlet runner was introduced into England around 1630 by John Tradescant the elder, gardener to King Charles I. As well as runners beans there are many climbing French beans with attractive mauve or white flowers. They need a sunny site, preferably south to west facing and thorough ground preparation for a good crop. Flowering starts early July and continues as long as you keep picking the beans through to late summer.

    Hi Harry,

Alex is correct :dbgrtmb:. There are other varieties as well. All the bi-coloured ones are more attractive from a flower point of view but are not as prolific as some of the reds.

Unfortunately I haven't got a photo of the tepees covered in bean flowers as the slugs got them all. My fault, I forgot to put down slug pellets
