I am new to roses and have been following the previous threads - so I know it is not to late to plant a climbing rose in a container with obelisk. Also thanks to WOO , I have some excellent planting and care points.
My question is - there is a bewildering variety of roses ! I would like an orange/apricot climber (they flower all summer ?) - any suggestions on a good variety ? Also which is the preffered online shop - I have been looking at David Austin and Apuldram.
    TIA

Hi Harry, you'll find it rather expensive to buy container roses on line, much better to send an enquiry to David Austin and/or Apuldram asking for a stockist near you. You could make it a day out and visit David Austin's nursery at Albrighton, but email and ask if they do container plants there, it's near RAF Cosford, just off the M54 J3 about a mile or two down the A41. That would have the added advantage of seeing a mature established plant so you could see what your container one will be like in years ro come.

Smiffy I like to see the condition of my roses before I purchase them so I like to get them at at local nurseries or in fact anywhere I can examine them but that is just me many people do use online suppliers quite successfully Hope this as been of some help to you.:thumb::)

    Thanks Mike and Woo
I take your point , I will purchase from a local nursery so I can see what I am buying ( my experience of mail order is mixed ! ). I think SunRise is the one I am going for its just the colour we want. But it says its a repeat flowering rambler? Is this not the same as a climber? - I do want a long flowering type.

Thanks again Mike and Woo , bought a Schoolgirl climber from a nearby nursery - it looks a fine specimen. Potted in a container 50/50 soil and peat, and watering morning and evening for 3 days. It will get the sun for 8-9 hours a day. I will be planting it in a border to cover a standard fence panel next year. Should I be doing anything to train it horizontal now?

Hi Smiffy A great choice Just remember to plant it about a foot away from the support it Is going to climb and try to water it depending on the weather of course once a week and no need to prune a climber for at least the first two or three years.:thumb::)
